Consumer Protection Act Branch
This branch deals with the Courts established under Consumer Protection Act. The State & District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions are a creation of Consumer Protection Act, 1986 which is a Central Legislation. State Commission has jurisdiction to entertain :-
(A) Complaints where the value of goods or services and compensation, if any, claimed exceeds 20 lacs but does not exceed Rs. 1 Crore and
(B) Appeals against the orders of any District Forum within the State
The State Commission has original, appellate and revisional jurisdiction. Besides the above, the State Commission has administrative control over all the District Consumer Forums in the State of Punjab as provided under Section 24-B of the Consumer Protection Act. In addition the President of the State Commission is the Head of the Department and as such performing all administrative functions also.
Similarly, each of the District Consumer Forum has a retired District Judge as President & two other members. The District Forum has jurisdiction to entertain complaints where the value of the goods or services and the compensation, if any, claimed does not exceed Rs.20 lacs.
